Welcome to the home page of Central Pathways, LLC!

Central Pathways is an audiology private practice that specializes in evaluating Central Auditory Processing (CAP) and treating Central Auditory Processing Disorders, or CAPD.  Central Auditory Processing (CAP) is also referred to as Auditory Processing (AP).  A simple definition of auditory processing is "what you do with what you hear", or how a person takes in and uses auditory stimuli.  A more in-depth definition can be found in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA) Task Force on Central Auditory Processing Consensus Development  document (www.asha.org).

An intact auditory system is necessary for hearing and accurately processing speech.  This, of course, is crucial for infants developing speech and language, and for school-aged children as they continue to learn.  The majority of a child's classroom instruction and interaction is auditory in nature.  A deficit in auditory processing can cause children to misunderstand what was said, become confused, or be unable to follow instruction in the presence of noise.  As a result, learning problems and educational difficulties may arise.

On this site, you'll find information about Central Pathways, as well as helpful resources related to CAPD.

If you're reading this page, you have most likely been searching for professionals to assist you in determining what your child needs to best succeed in learning.  In choosing a professional, it is important to select an audiologist when there is any concern regarding your child's hearing, or auditory processing.  No other professional can completely assess your child's auditory function - from their hearing thresholds to how their brainstem responds to a speech signal - except an audiologist.

Kris Erickson, Au.D., is a knowledgeable and caring audiologist, experienced in CAP assessment and treatment.  She will take the time to completely assess your child's hearing and auditory processing, as well as go over all of the results and recommendations with you.  It can be a daunting experience having your child undergo testing, and it is important to Dr. Erickson that you and your child feel comfortable and understand what is taking place.
